Marc Jacobs to Dior Not Likely
While the fashion world eagerly waits for the proverbial white smoke, Dior appears to be no closer to naming a successor for John Galliano following reports that negotiations with front-runner Marc Jacobs have come to a standstill, Women's Wear Daily reports.
Though Jacobs and LVMH head Bernard Arnault are still on "cordial" terms, Jacobs's ascension to the Dior ranks seem to be stymied by both his loyalty to the Louis Vuitton label as well as his desire to take his LV design team to Dior, should he be named creative director.
Phoebe Philo also plays an interesting role. The Cèline designer is tipped to replace Jacobs at Vuitton if he leaves, but is reportedly happy where she is, thus making an LVMH reshuffling less than seamless.
Dior executives are now said to be eyeing Alexander Wang, Jason Wu, and Raf Simons, while Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci, an early favorite, may still be a prospect.
Meanwhile, Alexander McQueen's Sarah Burton, Lanvin's Alber Elbaz, and Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquière reportedly spurned offers to be considered.
But don't count Jacobs out entirely. Though his move to Dior is unlikely, it's not unheard of.
“It is not impossible that [Arnault] resumes his talks with Marc," a source tells WWD.
At this point, we'd say anything is possible.
