City slickers: The trend at Balmain, Tommy Hilfiger, and Donna Karan

That mussed-up look might be better for those wash-n-go girls, 'cause you’ll definitely need to polish up for Spring 2012’s other dominating hair trend: slick, sleek strands.

The beachy waves and bombshell curls that have ruled the runway (and the red carpet) for the last several seasons might be out of vogue soon enough, if these catwalk coifs are any indication.

(A note on maintenance: Flyaways are not an option here—and humidity should be avoided like the plague.)

At Roland Mouret, hair was slicked back at the front and left loose (though still kept in place) at the back, similar to Balmain’s pulled-back pony. Also in Paris, at Lanvin, models including Miranda Kerr wore a strict middle part and straight strands.

In Milan, Gianfranco Ferre’s girls got a severely swept-back look, and while Gucci’s buns had a slight pompadour at the front, not a hair was out of place in the über-controlled style.

In New York, the style ranged from tight ponies at Marc by Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan, to sleek buns at Sophie Theallet, to side-parted styles at Zero + Maria Cornejo and Derek Lam, to a sharp middle part and super-smooth hair at Tommy Hilfiger.

Now just don't forget the AquaNet!

And check out the wet hair trend that ruled runways in New York.
