Mugler’s Nicola Formichetti Launching Own Line
He's creative director at Mugler, fashion director at Uniqlo and Vogue Hommes Japan, and counts Lady Gaga as a BFF/style devotee. And yet somehow Nicola Formichetti has found the time to embark on his own fashion label.
Dubbed Formichetti, the forward-thinking line of apparel and accessories is slated to launch in mid-2013, which will hopefully give the designer time to work out the technological advances he's envisioning, Women's Wear Daily reports.
Formichetti, who plans to launch the collection online instead of holding a traditional Fashion Week show, is exploring futuristic techniques that will meld form with function—think garments that act as cell phone chargers, or zipper-less pieces that mold to the body.

“It’ll be very digitally oriented and high-tech,” says Formichetti, who is working with a technology company to develop the line. “We’ve been working with the same fabrics, the same techniques for hundreds of years. That’s all great, but we need something new.”
Formichetti is also striking out on his own with a Nicopanda pop-up shop at the Lane Crawford luxury department store in Hong Kong, which features cartoon-emblazoned gifts and apparel as well as an exhibit of 20-plus looks worn by Gaga.
"This year I wanted to focus on my own dream," he tells WWD. "Being a stylist, you always hide behind a brand, but because of Gaga and Mugler, I needed to come out onto the scene. I had to embrace it."
Good for him. We'll be watching!
