Kate Young on New Fashion Line, Making Her Kids' Clothes
Between Brad Goreski’s blogging, Jeanne Yang’s fashion line (in collaboration with client Katie Holmes, no less), and Rachel Zoe’s veritable empire, styling has evolved from an occupation to a potential jumping-off point for, well, anything.
Now Kate Young, the Vogue alum who counts Natalie Portman and Rachel Weisz as clients and styles runway shows for the likes of Jason Wu, Vena Cava, and Yigal Azrouël, has teamed up with cozy chic knitwear line Cardigan for her own clothing collection.
The six-piece line consists of 100 percent merino wool sweatshirts, sweatpants and cardigans—for moms and their little ones—though Young maintains that the collaboration was more practical than anything else.
“I'm a big fan of Cardigan,” Young tells FashionEtc, explaining that she met the brand’s designer, Lynne Hiriak, when they were both consulting for Derek Lam. “I'd been wearing her men’s sweatshirt and was inspired to make a really thin drapey one. I told her she should do it and she suggested we do it together.”
“Honestly this was less about ‘designing’ and more about just working together to actually manufacture something that I wanted to own,” Young says. “We hoped [and] figured that other people would want the pieces too!”
This isn’t Young’s first foray into the production side of the business. “I make a lot of my kids’ clothes by hand because I want them to wear things that don't exist,” says the mother of two. “So it was exciting to make them woolens. My little one wears it all the time and he can grow into the bigger size. Sadly my older one got too big!”
Cardigan by Kate Young is available now on the Cardigan New York Web site.
