OVERALL TAKEAWAY: The maturing of the Jason Wu woman
There's a distinct feel of spring in the air. The old notion of a monochromatic black Fall collection fell by the wayside this season, and Jason Wu is no exception. His baroque Fall 2011 was a delightful mix of colors: violet, burgundy, pink. Black lace lined skirts, sleeves, and even faces. Chartreuse was tempered by black-lace embellishment and a tie.
The theme was Versailles, and the Swarovski crystal–studded jackets and piles of paillettes certainly called to mind the opulence of the palace. But beyond that the collection was very wearable.
Wu's impeccable tailoring was on display with the high-waist skirts, voluminous dresses, and draped evening gowns. More interesting were his pantsuits and high-waist trousers; one could easily picture Katharine Hepburn in the cream blouse with black pants.
The gold paillette gown brought to mind another master of the UES set, Oscar de la Renta, and this comparison is very much warranted. Wu has proven his ability to design flirty and fun pieces, and now his evolution into more serious pieces—with a touch of whimsy—is welcome.
