Alexa Chung Covers Harper’s Bazaar U.K., Talks Madewell, Copycats
For the October issue of Harper’s Bazaar U.K., cover star Alexa Chung (an It Brit if ever there was one) takes a cue from ’60s-era style icons like Twiggy and Penelope Tree with the help of some decade-appropriate designs.
Sporting a Bardot-worthy beehive and dramatic lower lashes, the Madewell collaborator is photographed by Ellen von Unwerth for a flirty and frothy fashion spread set in Notting Hill.
The Mulberry muse plays photographer in a dotty Stella McCartney design, hits the sheets in a voluminous tomato-red Lanvin number, and keeps with the mod theme in a belted Prada coat.
Though the trendsetter professes her love for vintage fashion (she has a wall in her home that pays homage to the likes of Jean Shrimpton and Jane Birkin), she admits that she feared her style was defining her.

Black and white and red all over: The style icon channels the ’60s with some sartorial support
from Lanvin (left) and Stella McCartney (right).
“I fell out of love with the Sixties for a while,” says Chung, who will reportedly return to TV as the host of upcoming fashion reality show, 24-Hour Catwalk. “I think because I was so identified with it. It’s like Sienna Miller when she did boho, then suddenly stopped because she was like, ‘F---. What else can I do, because I’ve done it?’
“Everyone copied my sodding coat for a while too. It was my Harrods kid’s vintage one. Every girl suddenly had one and I was like, ‘Arrgh!’ I got really bored of smock dresses and loafers for a while. But I feel like I’m ready to fall in love all over again.”
For proof, one need look no further than her second Madewell line, which references the ’60s.
“I’ve invented this tartan mac, it’s like something the Shrimp [Jean Shrimpton] would have worn,” she tells the magazine. “It’s got a round collar and a tie on it, so you can wear it like a cape without your hands in your sleeves.”
