This brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “The red coats are coming!”
A basic black winter coat is a standby in practically every wardrobe, but let’s be honest: Even with all the bells and whistles, a black coat is…a black coat. Why not catch some eyes with something a little more fiery? Luckily, this season’s New York designers have devised several ways for you to stand out.
First of all: the shade. Have a hard time choosing between blue-reds and orange-reds? Reed Krakoff doubled up in his collection, showing a two-tone red coat that was 100 percent chic.
Donna Karan’s nipped-waist blazer added a welcome bit of contrast to a black pants-white blouse ensemble, while Jason Wu’s buttoned-up take had a hint of the military edge that’s been a theme at several shows this week.

Michael Kors’ crimson overcoat, finished with a swath of plush fox fur, was our favorite of the season’s offerings, particularly when topping that perfectly matching slip dress. (Although the beauty of a coat like this is that it would be just as killer over jeans, no?)

Bill Blass designer Jeffrey Monteiro give his red coat a feminine edge with seaming that accentuated the waist, and Thakoon chose to give his crimson coat a bit of texture with in scarlet wool bouclé.
And though matchy-matchy’s falls out of favor among fashion crowds every now and then, these runway looks don't lie. What more perfect way to wear these coats than with a pair of ruby slippers and a look-at-me crimson lip?
