Best Dressed 2011: Celebrity Style Roundup

The end of the year is a time to look back at the last 12 months. Of course, our reflecting focuses on the best in fashion—what did you expect?

In a highly technical tallying of the style stars of 2011, FashionEtc gathered best-dressed lists from far and wide, creating our own ranking based on the number of times each stylish star appeared on each list.

Without further ado, the results ...

 1. Kate Middleton

It’s been quite a year for the Duchess of Cambridge, and—a few detractors aside—she’s won the hearts of the U.K.—and the world!—with her perpetually polished style. (An affinity for Alexander McQueen doesn't hurt either.) Catherine made a whopping seven appearances on 2011 best-dressed lists, from Vanity Fair to People to Vogue (which came with a nod to equally chic sister Pippa!).

2. Emma Stone

Two blockbuster films weren’t the star's only accomplishments this year: The now-back-to-ginger actress also popped up on five best-dressed lists (including Harper's Bazaar and Vogue U.K.) for her stunning appearances in Lanvin, Tom Ford, Bottega Veneta, Calvin Klein, Chanel Couture, and many more in 2011.

3. Alexa Chung

Okay, so Chung bested the Duchess when it came to the British Fashion Awards. And while she didn’t take the top spot in our collected list, Chung earned places on four lists, including Fashionista and Elle U.K.—and we’re expecting that this It Brit isn’t going anywhere.

4. Florence Welch

She’s counts Karl Lagerfeld as a friend, is a muse of Frida Giannini’s, and arrived at the 2011 Met ball on the arm of Stefano Pilati—which makes us not only jealous of her wardrobe (which landed her spots on four lists, including Vogue's best-dressed Rising Stars list), but her Rolodex. Call us!

and Cara Delevingne in Burberry

5. Hailee Steinfeld

She’s not the youngest style star on our list (that would be number seven … ), but making multiple best-dressed appearances—she scored spots on four lists, such as the Vogue's Rising Stars list—at the tender age of 15 is still pretty darn impressive. An endorsement from Miuccia Prada might have something to do with it.

6. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Funnily enough, former Victoria’s Secret models aren’t typically noted for their clothes. And though the stunner's professional work in 2011 included a lot of barely-there ensembles, it was her fabulously bombshell-worthy appearances on red carpets worldwide that clinched her spot on four best-dressed lists, like Harper's Bazaar and Vogue U.K.—and ours.

7. Elle Fanning

We shudder to think of what we were wearing at age 13—especially compared to the Chanel Haute Couture, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, and Rodarte that Fanning gets to sport on a seemingly daily basis. Kudos need also be given to her big sis, 17-year-old Dakota: the sisters secured two best-dressed spots as a duo on Vogue's Sibling Rivalry list and in Vanity Fair's sibling category, but the younger Fanning pulled ahead with two additional solo shout-outs from Fashionista and Vogue U.K.

8. Cara Delevingne

There must be something in the water over at Burberry! Burberry Body face (and, er, body), Rosie Huntington-Whiteley scored this list’s number-six spot, and Cara Delevingne (who has a few Burberry ad campaigns under her belt) snagged the last spot. Like Elle Fanning, Delevingne’s sister act—older sibling Poppy also models and is a fixture on the New York and London social scenes—earned her two best-dressed mentions from Vogue and Vanity Fair, but two more lists (Vogue U.K.'s and Elle U.K.'s) included the younger Delevingne all on her own.

Check out the full best-dressed lists from Fashionista, People, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue U.K., Elle U.K., Vanity Fair, Glamour, Vogue (Sibling Rivalry), and Vogue (Rising Star).
