Oscars 2011: Red Dresses Rule

Crimson Tide: Anne Hathaway, Penélope Cruz, Jennifer Lawrence, and Sandra Bullock in red.
Call it Hollywood camo: red gowns to match the red carpet.
Of course, it was impossible for Hollywood’s leading ladies to stay out of the spotlight at the 2011 Oscars thanks to their glamorous scarlet dresses, which edged out purple and cream as the evening’s biggest color trend.
Co-host Anne Hathaway led the pack in a strapless Valentino with a voluminous, rose-accented ruffled train that she complemented with the namesake designer himself, who joined her on the red carpet. Reportedly styled by Rachel Zoe, the brunette beauty rocked a soft, highlighted updo and ruby lips and nails.
Last year’s Best Actress winner, Sandra Bullock, traded 2010’s classic beaded Marchesa for a more va-va-voom Vera Wang. The strapless silk faille mermaid gown—chosen specifically because of its red hue, Bullock told the AP—featured an origami-bow detail in back for an extra dramatic flourish.
Nominee Jennifer Lawrence opted for a sleeker silhouette with her custom Calvin Klein Collection red silk crepe tank dress, one of the evening’s many sheath styles. Wearing her blonde locks loose, the Winter’s Bone star skipped the red lipstick in favor of a softer makeup look.
And while Mark Wahlberg’s model wife Rhea Durham’s bold red skirt paired with a metallic embellished top caught our eye, the Best Supporting Spouse of the night was undoubtedly Penélope Cruz, on hand to support nominated husband Javier Bardem. The new mother put her enviable post-baby curves (sigh) in a form-fitting L’Wren Scott red dress with flamelike hand-embroidered sequins. In a word, Biutiful.
