Triple threat: Derek Lam, Amanda Brooks, and Barneys CEO Mark Lee
Derek Lam’s luxe eponymous line needs no introduction, but Barneys devotees might be surprised to learn that the designer now has a presence on the Co-Op floor as well.
10 Crosby, which launched on November 16 at the high-end department store with a cocktail event hosted by Amanda Brooks, offers the designer’s signature style at a contemporary price point—from great tailored jackets to relaxed knits to printed silk, pajama-esque pants that clearly have Brooks’s stamp of approval (she was wearing them!).
“I wanted to design something that was going to be a challenge. [They’re] pieces that I could never have in the collection," he said, explaining that the more casual fabrics, slouchy feel, and bright colors were a bit younger than the dressed-up pieces in the main line. “[I used] my favorite fabrics, my favorite shapes, my favorite colors—no constraints!”
The name of the line comes from the label’s downtown New York headquarters—and was inspired by a certain bad habit of Lam’s: cigarette breaks. While popping his head out the window for a smoke, Lam would see particularly stylish people. “There were so many great moments with someone walking down the street,” he said. “Crosby Street is one of my favorite streets in New York. It’s a perfect mix of things I love about New York.”
