Royal Wedding Dress Raises Over 10 Million Pounds
Between the 661,000 people that attended the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition at the Met this summer and the over 600,000 that have gone to see the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress at Buckingham palace, the British fashion house has certainly earned a lot of recent attention.
In the latter case, those eyes have also led to some serious bank. According to the Telegraph, about £10.5 million (roughly $16 million U.S., at current exchange rates) is estimated to have been raised by the London exhibit.
"We've enjoyed welcoming visitors from all over the world to Buckingham Palace in record numbers this summer,” said a spokeswoman for the Royal Collection. “It has been an incredibly busy few months and we're delighted that it's been such a huge success."
Like Savage Beauty, the showcasing of Catherine's wedding dress was such a hit that its run dates were extended by two weeks, just now closing on October 3.
The money raised by the exhibition will benefit the Royal Collection, which maintains the works at the palaces, but the Telegraph reports that a portion of the funds will also go to charity, as requested by the Duchess.
And as for that Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen dress? The gorgeous gown will go into storage, and will reportedly not be on display again for several years.
