Kate Middleton’s Influence on New York Fashion Week
Every few years comes a new cultural zeitgeist that takes the fashion world by storm.
One year it was Mad Men. Another it was Amy Winehouse. Then it was Avatar. But for Spring 2012, what else could it possibly be but the Duchess of Cambridge?
“We are in a Kate moment,” Ed Burstell, managing director for Liberty of London, told the New York Times. “Everyone wants to look like her, to act like her, to be her.”
According to the paper, designers from Wes Gordon to Jason Wu to Rachel Zoe have all taken inspiration from the royal trendsetter’s polished, proper look.
“We are definitely returning to a time when we want things that are more timeless and polished, not looking a mess,” Rachel Zoe—an unexpected champion of the look, as her signature style is that of the more-is-more bohemian—told the the Times.
“Now people are interested in looking ladylike,” said Wu. “The duchess is part of that.”
Sheer hose on the runway? That remains to be seen. But fascinators, ladylike dresses, and formal coats are all fair game.
See you on the catwalk, Catherine!
And speaking of Jason Wu, we’ve got the scoop on the designer’s collaboration with OPI for his Spring 2012 runway show.
