Nicki Minaj Gets the Blues for ‘Vogue’

Nicki Minaj sits pretty for Vogue.

She’s had pink, orange, and green hair, and worn lipsticks all across the color spectrum. But for Vogue’s March issue, Nicki Minaj is channeling a certain Smurfette by going blue.

Her pink hair and lips and scarlet dress, gloves, and thigh-highs give her a glamorous twist that recalls Andy Warhol’s color-saturated Marilyns, but Minaj insists that she wasn’t always so interested in her appearance.

“I was dressing in Tommy Hilfiger baggy shirts and Boss jeans,” she said of her time growing up in Queens. “But then I met a person who dressed like a tiny lady—pantsuits, heels, lots of makeup. I thought she was larger than life.

“She once did my makeup—I had never seen myself made up before. I didn’t want to wash it off; I felt like I had one day to live this fantasy of being a glamour girl.”

And even now, though she sports haute labels like Versace and Oscar de la Renta (and has sparked rumors of wanting to design her own clothing line), she says head-to-toe high-end is not her cup of tea.

“If I can combine designer things with other things, I’m a happy camper,” she told Vogue.

Of course, she does have some indulgences. “Giuseppe [Zanotti], Versace, YSL, and Fendi shoes. And I bought tons of Vuitton bags. When you’re a young girl from Queens, you’re going to stock up on those bags.”

The March issue of Vogue is on newsstands now.
