Marigold looks from the Jil Sander, Lanvin, and Miu Miu Fall 2011 collections
This fall, give your loyal LBD a break. Black may forever be the go-to hue for formal wear, but an unexpected shade is giving it a run for its money: marigold.
It’s not a primary color, a neon, or even that ubiquitous metallic, but a rather fall-appropriate shade of yellow that skews more mustard than any sweet pastel. And no, it’s not for everyone—but that didn’t stop Roland Mouret, Jil Sander, Lanvin, Miu Miu, Acne, Bottega Veneta, and more from offering up their takes on a perfect little dress in the color.
Alber Elbaz’s plunging draped-and-tucked cocktail mini brightened up a black-heavy Lanvin collection, while Jil Sander’s low-belted tee dress with elbow-length sleeves was more day friendly—but no less striking color wise (a contrasting tomato-red envelope clutch and matching lips didn’t hurt).
Miu Miu’s Miuccia Prada also went more day with her ’40s-ish coatdress, complete with wide shoulders and a girlish white collar.
Acne offered an array of options in the shade, from tricky iridescent velvet pants to a great tailored sleeveless blazer; layering subtly different variations of the color in one look made for a striking appearance.
Bottega Veneta put a unique spin on the hue as well by opening with a furry mustard-yellow parka, closing with a dramatic duchesse satin ball gown, and putting a parade of marigold dresses darkened up with layers of black lace in the middle.
Goldilocks has got nothing on these.
