Resort 2012 Jill Stuart

The '70s may still be the decade of choice for the fashion-minded, but Jill Stuart seemed to have another era on the mind when it came to resort: the '40s.

A lineup of fluttery-sleeved, fluttery-skirted dresses in sweet little floral prints looked perfect for pairing with saddle shoes and a cherry-red lip on the dance floor (or maybe I’ve just seen this scene from A League of Their Own a few too many times).

Doo.Ri Resort 2012 collection

Late artist Sonia Delaunay currently has an exhibition at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and her name has popped up as inspiration on the resort show circuit—and Doo.Ri has noticed.

Designer Doo Ri Chung was inspired, according to her notes, “not only by Delaunay’s intricate design process, but also by her theories in color and contrast.”

Douglas Hannant Resort 2012 collection

How do you hammer home the idea of a cruise collection in the middle of steamy hot Manhattan? (Seriously, it's really hot here folks.) You stage it on the Intrepid. And that's precisely what Douglas Hannant did.

Scores of his loyal customers and sweating editors teetered on heels (thankfully we were rewarded with cold beverages) and waited for the show. I have to say, with the city as a backdrop and planes along the runway, it was a pretty dramatic setting.

Monique Lhuillier’ Resort 2012

For those who frequent the black tie event circuit (or for those who frequently report on the black tie event circuit—ahem) it can sometimes seem like black and metallic are the only option for women’s formal wear. (Okay, nudes and blushes make appearances from time to time.)

But if Monique Lhuillier’s resort offerings catch on the way I hope they do, expect some serious color on red carpets—particularly, a bright poppy red that brightened up the whole room at her preview.
