Fall 2011 Beauty Trend: Bold Brows

Bold brows on the Jen Kao, Derek Lam, Jason Wu, and Alexander Wang Fall 2011 runways.
Just as designers have their body fixations—one season it’s the shoulder, another it’s the waist—so do makeup artists. Currently fascinating: the eyebrow.
At Derek Lam, the brow communicated gravitas. Given the brief—Lam wanted to evoke the portraits of late German photographer August Sander—the makeup couldn’t be frothy. Up for the challenge, makeup artist Tom Pecheux showed us a “strong, powerful” brow (“You can feel it!” he said) that made even the teenage models’ gazes look steely. Success.
For Alexander Wang, the entire look was predictably tough, but it was the graphic eyebrow that really drove the message home. Blocky, angular and filled in with powder, the brows were defiant and androgynous. It’s almost as if Wang had designed them himself.
It wasn’t all so serious, though: Full, pretty brows made a cameo at Altuzarra, Oscar de la Renta, Luca Luca, Christian Siriano, and Jill Stuart. At the latter, the inevitable (but apt) Brooke Shields reference came up.
A couple of makeup artists took the statement brow to a new level. At Jen Kao, makeup artist/brow enthusiast Polly Osmond really went for it, obscuring the models’ brows in M.A.C. Gold Pigment with gold glitter on top.
And at Jason Wu, a showstopper brow meant nearly no brow at all: Makeup artist Diane Kendal bleached them. Everybody looked.
