Prabal Gurung may have been on top of the world, celebrating his fabulous Fall 2011 collection at the brand-new Mister H at the Mondrian Soho, but one thing was missing from his triumphant Saturday: “I really want to sit down and talk to my mother—well, not sit down but Skype!” the Nepal-born designer said. “It’s been too long!”

Of course, nothing was stopping the festivities of the evening (his mother was able to see each runway look in real time via live stream), as Gurung’s friends and fans joined him for champagne and dancing.

“I feel great, happy, thrilled—happy it’s done!” Gurung said. “I would say [this collection] is an evolution. I’m getting to a point where I’m really discovering myself. It’s a long journey. I think people don’t know a side of me, and I’ve just touched the surface!”

Reflecting on the aforementioned journey, he compared himself now to the Gurung of years past. “I’m a little wiser,” he said. “I know that at the end of the day all I need to care about is my own voice and my own reasoning and my own beliefs. That’s it.”

His mother would be proud.
