OVERALL TAKEAWAY: Walking the line between sexy and chic
If visions of a romantic liaison set on British moors came to mind when Prabal Gurung’s show walked, you wouldn’t be off the mark. He told Style.com the inspiration was romance with “a slightly savage, streetwise edge.” Heathcliff and Catherine for a modern, cynical world; a match made in heaven.
The collection was a mix of draped silk, wool, and furs (mink, alpaca, fox, goat, astrakhan), finished off with leather and resulting in a dramatic effect. This isn’t last season’s colorblocking, body-con Prabal Gurung.
Loose, flowing silk chiffon was paired with a silk chemise in dove gray for one of the more romantic looks of the show. An ivory silk organza dress with a hand-draped flounce could play the perfect role of gothic wedding dress.
But not all the gowns were so unfettered. A wool sheath in crimson (with leather half-gloves and belt) skimmed the figure, the neckline falling off the shoulder.
Gurung’s closing gowns had all the embellishment and detailing we’ve come to expect from him: Ostrich feathers and Swarovski beads and elements showcased the designer’s tendency for flair.
It’s not often a lauded designer creates a sexy collection that also contains practical and (that oh-so-boring word) wearable pieces, but Gurung manages to walk the line between seductive and chic.
