We may not lure her across the pond very often, but Alice Temperley gave her gorgeous new book, True British, a proper American toast Wednesday night with a party in New York.

The Rizzoli-published tome takes a look back at Temperley’s 10 years in the business—a decade that, the designer says, has really taught her about who she is.

“My favorite part about doing the book was seeing that message we had at the very beginning is still the message that we have now,” she told FashionEtc. “The learning over the last 10 years is in those pages, and it’s quite honest. It’s not airbrushed!”

The downtown apartment where the party was held (owned by a film director friend of Temperley’s) drew guests like Padma Lakshmi and Hamish Bowles—and though she’s a true Brit through and through, Temperley did dish a bit on her favorite things about the States.

“What I love about America is that people are very passionate about clothing. It’s really seen as a big business, and people really understand and celebrate fashion,” she said. “I love the fact that the New York woman knows exactly what she likes. There are lots of different sorts of New York women and I love that they’re all very savvy and educated in knowing that they like. I like the honesty that comes with New York fashion.”

In related news, Temperley is hoping to dress Pippa Middleton for her own wedding.
