John Galliano was reportedly arrested for alleged assault and an anti-Semitic rant.

John Galliano may be viewed as fashion's bad boy, but his brush with the law has stunned the fashion industry.

The Dior designer was detained by police in Paris's Marais district Thursday evening on charges of assault and making anti-Semitic remarks toward a couple sitting on a café terrace, the AFP reports.

Galliano, who is set to show his hotly anticipated Fall/Winter 2011 Dior collection at Paris Fashion Week on March 4, was alleged to have been intoxicated during the incident.

"For the moment, we don't know what led him to address the couple," a police source said. "We don't yet know if they knew each other or not."

Though Dior has yet to comment, a lawyer for the 50-year-old designer says the charges are false.

"[Galliano] formally denies the accusations of anti-Semitism made against him," Stephane Zerbib said.

"[He] is not at all in this state of mind (and) will explain later ... legal action will be taken against those making such accusations."

In the meantime, Galliano has been released pending charges being filed.
