Jil Sander On Her Return to Her Brand
The recent shake-ups at major design houses has kept everyone following the European shows on their toes. But while things may be far from settled at Dior or Yves Saint Laurent, Jil Sander—who recently announced that she’d be retuning to her own label, with Raf Simons departing—seems content to be back where she came from.
“At the moment, there seems to be a craving for authenticity and clear visions,” Sander told Women’s Wear Daily. “I am confident that this is the time for modern sophistication, for attractive, wearable fashion which is true to the new century.”
It may be her own line, but she’ll have big shoes to fill: Simons’ last collection was met with rave reviews, a standing ovation, and many a tear. But Sander seems confident in her own creativity.

“I do have strong convictions which evolved but never radically changed over time,” she said. “I never tried to be provocative, but I never indulged in nostalgia, either. Fashion is experimentation, and if you keep the sophistication, it can also be eccentric. You have to break rules, if there is a good reason. And now is the right time to be daring, there are few new ideas.”
Looks like the Spring 2013 season—and Sander’s first collection in eight years—can’t come soon enough…
