Upper West Siders Upset Over New York Fashion Week

It’s any fashion follower’s home away from home two weeks out of the year—but what about when it’s your actual home?
Many Upper West Siders who live near Lincoln Center are not thrilled with the way Fashion Week overtakes their neighborhood, the New York Times reports.
“It’s an assault on the neighborhood,” Michael Graff, a lawyer who lives nearby, told the Times. In fact, a group of residents and members of the nonprofit NYC Parks Advocates recently sent a cease and desist letter to the city and to Lincoln Center asking that Damrosch Park—the exact location of the tents at Lincoln Center, which is meant to be a public park—be returned to a city park.
But Fashion Week goers and designers needn’t prepare to pack their things just yet.
“Fashion Week generates $865 million in economic activity each year and helps create jobs in one of our city’s most important industries,” Julie Wood, a spokeswoman for Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, told the Times.
Looks like the fashion industry will continue to dig its stiletto’ed feet into Damrosch Park. The good news? New York Fashion Week ends on Thursday. Until next season, UWS!
