Bill Gaytten: Dior Isn’t About Me

He said back in July that he wanted to be the one to follow in former boss John Galliano’s footsteps at Dior, but now it seems that Bill Gaytten is taking a step back.

After a couture collection that was universally panned and a Spring 2012 collection that most critics described as pretty but safe, the designer—who has been named the creative director of the John Galliano label and is acting as something of a placeholder until Galliano’s successor is announced—told the New York Times that it’s the team in place that’s important.

“My honest opinion is that there is a certain amount of self expression here, but not that much,” Gaytten said. “It is about the theme of the show, the code of the house, the clients and the customers. It’s not like an artist up in an attic working on a painting alone or writing alone. This is a big team, where everyone has an opinion, so my job is to coordinate and unify. It’s not that much about me.”

It’s a different sentiment from the aforementioned prior interview with the Times, when Cathy Horyn asked him directly if he wanted the position and he responded, “Yeah, I do. I’m not a fool.”
