Tom Ford: ‘Americans Are Too Fat’
Tom Ford, known for sexing up Gucci and putting many a naked model in his eponymous lines' ad campaigns, is nothing if not obsessed with the body—just not every body.
In an interview with Time Out Hong Kong, Ford dished on what he really thinks about particular forms. When the reporter asked the designer whether his collections would fit everybody, Ford responded, ”I have to say if we have to talk about things like this, Americans are too fat. And in London they are starting to get fat too…I find it refreshing that everyone [who is] Chinese is slim.”
While Ford says that his women’s collection can be altered to fit most people, he does admit that it’s intended for a certain body type. “I do design for a specific person…who’s probably thin, quite honestly,” he said. “She takes care of herself.”
As for his menswear? Ford looks very close to home. “You do design for a kind of ideal,” he said. “The ideal comes from me, from menswear. I’m my muse.”
Looks like we can look forward to more ads showcasing Ford’s handsome face, then ...
