Specs appeal: The fashion house is launching eco-friendly eyewear.
Organic cotton, alpaca, recycled polyester—when it comes to fashion designers going green, much of the focus stays on apparel. But what of accessories?
Gucci and the Safilo Group (which holds the licenses for Gucci eyewear, as well as frames for Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs, Yves Saint Laurent, and more) have teamed up to put a sustainable spin on glasses.
The two companies are working together to create several new materials for the sunglasses, which (as opposed to traditional plastics) will be produced with significantly lower CO2 emissions. The first, an acetate with a higher percentage of natural materials than typical optical frames, and the second, a bio-based material made from castor oil seeds, will be released in August 2011.
In addition, Gucci and Safilo are working to reduce the environmental impact of their packaging and are developing a prototype for a material alternative to plastic.
