Leighton Meester Covers Lucky, Talks Style Evolution and Success
For plenty of television viewers, she is Blair Waldorf, all headbands and impossibly preppy color combos. But Leighton Meester, who covers the July issue of Lucky in a summery-print Dolce & Gabbana number, insists that her style is a work in progress.
“My friend says that before the show I dressed like a homeless person,” the Gossip Girl actress told the magazine. “I used to buy everything at garage sales. It was hard to give up! I’d be like, ‘But this crazy sweater is amazing, and it only cost 25 cents!’ I’ve learned from Blair, though. Now I like to pepper in something designer with my usual stuff.”
Her cover shoot has plenty of style, naturally—including a flowy Prada ensemble and racecar-red pumps. It’s safe to say those garage sale days are behind her—though Meester says she doesn’t take her good fortune for granted.
“You can’t count on success in this business,” she said. “And anyway, being famous or rich or making a certain kind of movie—none of that means ‘success’ to me. Success to me is being happy and fulfilled, truly fulfilled, and being proud of myself and doing different things all the time. So thus far, yes, I’ve been successful.”
The July issue of Lucky hits newsstands June 5.
