The Lady is a vamp!

Lady Gaga has finally landed her first Vogue cover, giving the March issue some art deco glamour in a pink Louise Brooks–style bobbed wig, bleached brows, dark purple lips, and a slinky, plunging cream silk Haider Ackermann gown.

Photographed by Mario Testino, the fashion icon—who says she’s “quite down-to-earth for such an eccentric person”—takes over Antwerp’s Royal Museum of Fine Arts for a lush shoot that includes her own Hussein Chalayan leather jacket and ornate gowns from Alexander McQueen.

The singer also talks to the magazine about her much-anticipated new song “Born This Way” (billed as “the gayest song ever” by Elton John), her musical talent (she considers herself one of the greatest songwriters with one of the greatest voices), and her passionate love for her fans, whom she hopes view her as “your cool older sister.”

Naturally, fashion also comes up in the conversation.

“The fashion community in general got me much earlier than everyone else,” she says.

“But actually, I felt truly embraced by this London cultural movement, that McQueen, Isabella, Daphne Guinness wing of the English crowd. I remember when I first started doing photo shoots, people would say, ‘My God, you look so much like Isabella Blow, it scares me.’ And McQueen used to say, ‘Oh, my God, your boobs!’ He actually grabbed both of them and said, ‘Even your boobs are like hers!’”

Saying she feels misunderstood for being “sort of middle fingers up, a-blazing,” Gaga—who says she buys a lot of her own clothes in order to support young designers—opens up about her daring fashion choices.

“People just want to figure it out or explain it,” she says.

“The truth is, the mystery and the magic is my art. That is what I am good at. You are fascinated with precisely the thing that you are trying to analyze and undo.”

And what of her stylist Nicola Formichetti, now at Thierry Mugler?

To put it bluntly … Lady Gaga rocks a short-banged bob in Vogue.

“Our relationship does have some influence on the show, but I don’t want to take any credit for it,” she says.

“Nicola is fashion. He’s the most remarkable man.”
