The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is hard at work completing this spring’s exhibition: “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”

The Robert Lehman Wing Galleries on the Museum’s first, and ground, floors will feature this fascinating 150 ensemble exploration into how designers are reconciling hand (manus) and machine (machina) made into haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear. Looks range from an 1880s Charles Worth gown to a 2015 Chanel suit.

“What all of these examples reveal is that the hand and the machine work in tandem in the creation of fashion for haute couture or ready-to-wear. By attempting to unravel as well as to reconcile the oppositional relationship between the hand and the machine, the exhibition intends to advance a new paradigm for fashion which is more germane to our age of technology,” Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute, told WWD at the exhibition’s special preview in February.

Other hot items include a range of Issey Miyake bags, a Maison Martin Margiela magnifying glass, a Noa Raviv silk scarf, Junko Koshino handbags, and a silk chiffon Alexander McQueen scarf.

This exhibition runs from May 5 to August 14, 2016
