Rodan + Fields Raise Awareness for Skin Cancer
Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, the dynamic duo behind the powerhouse Proactiv, have moved on from their famous acne line to create Rodan + Fields - a whole new line of products to help all skin care needs – with a focus on anti-aging. Since May is Skin Cancer Awareness month, this month they are encouraging us to cultivate a smarter relationship with the sun.
“The sun is not your friend” Dr. Katie Rodan tells us in the first of a series of short videos the pair will be releasing this month to raise awareness about the dangers of the sun. “An estimated 90% of skin aging is caused by the sun.” adds Dr. Kathy Fields.
According to the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention there are more than 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed and 2.2 million people treated in the U.S. each year. The rise of new cases is likely attributed to an increasingly active lifestyle and, therefore, increased sun exposure. Examine your own skin often and if you notice any new spots, or changes in moles or spots consult a doctor right away.
Studies show that most people only use 25-50% of the recommended amount of sunscreen, and then think they are covered for the entire day. Applied about 30 minutes before going outside, a full ounce of sunscreen (approximately the size of a shot glass) is needed to cover your entire body, and at least a teaspoon amount to provide enough coverage for your face. Re-applying sunscreen after swimming, sweating, or being outside for more than a few hours is a must!

Much of the rise of new cases can be attributed to an increasingly active lifestyle and, therefore, increased sun exposure. In 2015 Vogue editor Sarah Brown shared her own skin cancer story, and talked about how it’s possible to undo some sun damage.
Protect your skin by avoiding tanning beds, wearing protective clothing and wide brim hats, seeking shade as much as you can during the hottest times of the day (between 10am and 4pm) and to never leave home without your broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreen on. Beware though of sunscreens that contain dangerous chemical ingredients. Good quality sunscreens use natural zinc as a base and can be purchased from stores like Whole Foods or similar, or online, including from Rodan + Fields. They offer sunscreens for your body and lips, as well as a quick-drying foaming sunless tan product so you can still get your glow – safely!
