For Chanel’s 2012/2013 Cruise collection, the designer’s setting was the gardens at Versailles—yes, the palace. Tilda Swinton, Vanessa Paradis, Inès de la Fressange, and Chanel handbags model Alice Dellal were among the beauties seated front row. And let’s not forget about the clothes!

Lagerfeld seemed to have taken a bit of inspiration from the palace’s most famous resident—that would be Marie Antoinette—for this collection, which featured confectionery colors (even pale purple hair!) and decidedly royal details. Of course, he brought things up to date with chunky platform shoes (Louis XIV would never!), Peter Philips-designed face tattoos, and frothy minidresses.
