Tom Ford Fall 2012: The Critics Weigh In
His secretive schtick (no pictures, please!) is old news by now, but that won’t stop the fashion flock from immediately dishing after seeing Tom Ford’s latest lineup. After a lukewarm reception for his Spring 2012 collection, the verdict is in for Fall 2012: Ford’s magic touch is back.
The praise most often lavished on Ford this season refers to his impeccable craftsmanship.
“This is as near as you'll get to couture, with individual snake and crocodile scales hand- embroidered onto form-fitting stretch jersey dresses to make incredibly sexy gold shimmering or black dresses that, despite what they look like, are still officially ready-to-wear,” wrote Vogue UK’s Dolly Jones. “There is no expense spared in the world of Tom Ford.”
“To give you an idea of the clothes: we're talking lots of skinny tailoring and chubby fur coats, tight leather and sinuous crepe, bags with polished golden hardware and sharp-pointed stiletto boots,” penned the Guardian’s Jess Cartner-Morley—one of Ford’s biggest critics last season. “Serious glamour, very grown-up. Clothes that are too classy to be pigeonholed in any trend, but which look completely contemporary … Unfortunately, the prices are as fairytale as the super-luxe fabrics, and I can't afford any of it.”

Those for whom price is no object, though, can start here—particularly those who may or may not be standing on stage at this weekend’s Academy Awards.
“Oscar attendees, get thee to Tom and you'll find yourself looking like a winner, even if you miss out,” wrote Harper’s Bazaar UK.
The Telegraph’s Lisa Armstrong agreed. “Those red carpet gowns [were] slinky, sexy (obviously) with sheer inserts and rock heavy gold hardware. They'd add some oomph to the forthcoming Oscars,” she noted. “Or how about gold snake scales, each one individually appliquéd onto a mesh base? That dress will probably retail for about £14,000—pricey enough to capture a movie star's attention, surely?”
Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see on Sunday…
