Most kids grow up hearing bedtime tales by Aesop or the brothers Grimm, but for the more fashionable tot, design duo Viktor & Rolf has stepped up to the literary plate.
Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren have written and illustrated Fairy Tales, a collection of 12 original stories. You won’t find Cinderella or Rapunzel here, though; characters in the stories include the Disco Hedgehog and the Little Dragon Butterfly.
"It was a hobby project we did for fun that became more serious," Horsting told Vogue UK of the project. "We had been writing these stories since years and then there was a sudden interest to publish them.”
“It's another tangible vehicle of expression but of a different variety, which we like,” he continued. “We always play with scale and proportion, creating conceptual and surreal glamour. The surreal element, the sense of escapism can also be found in the enchanting world of our fairy tales."
In addition to the surreal spin, expect the stories to have the signature wit of the brand.

The dark forest: a glimpse into Viktor & Rolf's fantasy world.
"Some are funny, some are more tragic, some are deep,” Snoeren said. “They are elements of us and elements of every human being. The message is that being different, in whichever way, is a good thing.”
“They provide a window to a different, magical world and can completely take you away from the here and now,” he said. “We would love to bring to readers of the book a sense of irony and fascination; to trigger the imagination and open up new windows to different worlds and possibilities.”
Fairy Tales will be available in October.
