Lula bags by L'Wren Scott for Fall 2011.

Stylist-turned-designer L’Wren Scott’s sleek, sexy dresses have won fans from Nicole Kidman to Oprah (we assume her beau Mick Jagger likes them as well), but her signature style has now been translated to something women can sport every day: the handbag.

Scott debuted her brand new collection of bags Wednesday morning at Barneys New York, where the Lula style will be sold exclusively.

First things first: What’s in a name? Lulu, which includes an everyday handbag and a larger weekend bag, is named after Scott’s mother. “She always had a very sleek and chic bag, and it always made a sound,” Scott said as she showed off the clicking closure. “That sound was a big memory for me!”

The bags, which come in leather or exotic skins (the exotics are numbered, and there are only 75 total worldwide), are intended to be everyday bags, with pockets inside for lipstick, cell phones, and even your iPad. “You need one perfect thing,” said Scott. “You don’t need hundreds.”

“I’m obsessed with proportion—you may have noticed I’m very tall!” Scott, a statuesque 6’3” without heels, laughed. “[The bag] is much bigger inside than it looks. It's like architecture!”

Like her ready to wear, the Lula is pricey (from $2,300 for a small calfskin bag to over $20,500 for a croc version, according to Women’s Wear Daily), but Scott assures it’s worth it. “I've never been an It girl, and I haven’t thought of an It something. This bag is not going anywhere,” she said. “It's an investment piece, and it has to work for you over and over.”
