OVERALL TAKEAWAY: Sleek lines and simple day wear were the highlights of the collection.

For Fall 2011, Amy Smilovic showed a colorful, if a bit uneven, collection for Tibi. Her day wear was, as always, appealing: young, professional suit separates in on-trend colors, chic shapes, and feminine styles. Mostly muted shades (with bright accents), slim cuts, and sleek lines lent the pieces a sophisticated presence.

The looks were simple and modern, in a range of blacks and dark, earthy hues that were accented with various pinks: a hot pink armband and a salmon top peeking out from under a charcoal blazer and slim trousers had a fun, youthful vibe. Outerwear in shearling, twill, mohair and tweed paired with slinky chiffon dresses created a nice contrast.

The difference between day and evening wear was, well, night and day. Day won us over with its simplicity and colors, but the cocktail looks weren't as inspiring. The chiffon and organza dresses were decidedly pretty (in bold reds and stark white), and the tuxedo jacket was a nice addition. But the baby-doll silhouettes skewed too young.

Though some pieces were hits—the shorter, white organza dress with square pieces for texture, for example—others, like the overly voluminous top and skirt in the finale, were misses.

Smilovic excels at simple, elegant looks: knits, cute dresses, and pantsuits for the young working woman. The highlights of this collection are evidence of that.
