Mandy Coon said her Fall 2011 inspiration was her mother circa 1979: “Dressed in a creamy turtleneck and high-waisted trousers, she was the definition of quiet chic.”
Don’t be fooled by the conservative description—if Mrs. Coon inspired this array of edgy ensembles, she was surely one badass mom.
Black was the primary color here, with a few shots of bright magenta (great in tailored trousers) and a tie-dye print in ivory and earth tones. Coon expanded her evening wear options with her Fall collection, but there were no sweet little dresses: Think long, draped, capelike and black.
Coon, a recent recipient of the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation award, had an extra $25,000 to put into her Fall 2011 collection—and the beefed-up materials budget really shone. There was no shortage of luxe leathers, furs and pythons, often pieced together for multitexture black tees, baby-doll dresses, floor-length skirts, and hooded coats.
Leather bows that adorned dresses and belts might be tricky for the average woman to wear but will surely be just as beloved by the street-style set as that bunny bag.
