The show notes may have put a time stamp for Costello Tagliapietra's Fall 2011 collection at around 1994, but the jersey dresses, wraps, and draping looked more at home on Bianca Jagger back in the day. Color after color stomped out onto the runway—vermilion, mint, red, saffron—all adding to the retro vibe. Not to mention the Valley of the Dolls hair.
A tinge of Eastern influence also made itself known with belted, kimono-esque dresses and in the use of the saffron and burnt orange hues.
The designers excelled in simple, sexy jersey dresses and the bold use of draping and wrapping. One particular high point was an orange and saffron striped dress with a matching scarf.
We weren't fond of the thick waffle prints but were entertained by the alpaca fur mittens and hats, if only because they brought to mind pieces from our youth. (The fur is, the designers noted, eco- and animal-friendly, and only alpacas that died of natural causes were used.)
The deep backs were a pleasant surprise on some of the simpler dresses.
Retro or not, the collection was a decidedly chic, simple and colorful entry for Fall.
