Jenni Kayne may have been stuck in L.A. while her Fall 2011 collection took to the New York runway (her second child is due in about three weeks), but the California cool that has become her signature came through all the same.
Inspired by “eccentric weekends” in the countryside, Kayne presented sleek separates like silk slip dresses topped with chunky cardigans; a nubby overcoat; and several pairs of fabulous bright trousers, cut in pajamalike silk but tailored to perfection.
Floor-length silk wrap skirts were topped with pared-down blouses or knits, an unexpected pairing that lent a real ease to the entire collection. Other standouts? A simple, conservative shirtdress sexed up a bit in black leather and a magenta “overlap” minidress that had a slightly ’60s pop.
Kayne’s color palette was strong: neutrals like black, camel and ivory were punched up with bright raspberry, cerulean and gold. One sequin slip dress in the latter shade will be perfect for those L.A. party girls—minus the conservative cardi, naturally.
Overall, the collection will surely appeal to those who take their comfort and their chic in equal doses, all across the country.
