OVERALL TAKEAWAY: If it was less ebullient than some of Som’s past shows, it made up for it in sophistication.
His style signatures may just be color and print—so imagine showgoers’ surprise when the first handful of looks took Peter Som’s runway in clean ivories and whites. In place of prints, Som played with tonal textures: flouncy ruffle-edged peplums, straight skirts with sheer panels, a furry cream wrap coat.
An emphasis on the waist meant peplums were prevalent, often flaring out from crisp jackets with architectural rounded sleeves. His Marlene Dietrich moment came with a pleated, buttoned-up tuxedo shirt paired with leather pants, but there was plenty on the feminine side as well with long, sheer skirts (long in the back, short in the front) and plush, Old Hollywood-ready furs (and although the aforementioned starlets might have passed on the acid-colored patchwork fox jacket, the fashion flock will eat it up).
And of course, Som didn’t abandon those prints altogether: A vaguely floral moto jacket in ruby red will keep fans new and old coming back for more.
