Overall Takeaway: A step into sportswear for the drama-loving designer
Easy might not be the first word that comes to mind when considering Christian Siriano. After all, he’s a designer that’s made his name (post-Project Runway, that is) with more-is-more evening dresses. But Spring 2012 was all about dialing down the drama for looks that were a bit more relaxed—but no less glam.
Case in point: floor-length skirts, in pleated chartreuse organza or a closer to the body coral crepe, paired with simple jersey tees. Sometimes, the latter was done in stripes, for a summer-by-the-shore vibe. Cape-back blouses and paper bag-waist pants were equally breezy, and a perfectly tailored simple white shift dress with a V-back would be a go-to for (really) nearly any occasion.
Of course, that’s not to say he’s left the showstoppers behind entirely: The show closed with a parade of voluminous dresses that draped, spiraled, and poufed sufficiently for any red carpet. But Siriano’s strong daywear (and the great looks that, somehow, encompassed both) will be what keeps him moving forward.
