Mother of Pearl Fall 2012

Sometimes art-inspired fashion turns out beautifully—a prime example being Erdem’s painterly Fall 2011 stunner—but all too often it can be too literal. After all, no one, even the Parkett-devouring art geeks of the world, wants to wear a Jackson Pollock.

Luckily, Mother of Pearl, a line with art cred aplenty, got things right for fall. Every season, designer Maia Norman, whose partner is spot-loving YBA Damien Hirst, works with a different artist on her collection; past collaborators have included Carsten Höller and Keith Tyson. Fall 2012 marked Norman’s linkup with painter Fred Tomaselli, whose brushstrokes found their way onto slim pants and oversized T-shirts, while his bird prints decorate a dirndl-style dress. Balancing out all the embellishment are minimalist leather pieces in solid colors, like the robin's-egg blue and tan skirts, fitted jackets and chic drawstring mini-backpacks. Best of all, many of the looks are accessorized with sporty, sidewalk-friendly sneakers. We're happy to report that the collection works for gallerinas and regular girls alike.
