Best of Resort 2012: Our 12 Favorite Collections

Resort 2012 collections have trickled to a close. The commercially-aimed season (always a bit more wearable than RTW, and always on the sales floor longer than other seasons) was full of fun pieces, bold colors, and trends we've seen in spring and fall. Nautical, naturally, is huge for resort; but next to the stripes and sailor pants were bold reds, gorgeous dresses, and pants—from McQueen. Yes, you read that correctly.

Herewith we present our top 12 collections from the season.

We nearly stopped in our tracks when we saw pants at McQueen. Yes, pants. Not pantaloons, or some skull-adorned parachute contraptions. Utterly wearable pants. In fact, the entire collection was just that—wearable. This isn’t the first time the label has ventured into the oh-so-commercial pre-seasons. If it’s not as show-stopping as ready to wear, that's because resort’s goal is to sell sell sell. And these will most certainly do that. But for those die hard McQueen fans, rest assured there were plenty of the brand's prints, luscious fabrics, and jaw-dropping evening gowns.

This moment, this season was made for Anna Sui. Flowy dresses, tribal prints, and light fabrics? Check, check and check. Sui excels at boho dresses that are easy to wear—just what her customer wants for resort. And with the addition of sweet ivory maxi dresses, Sui is perfectly on trend with Spring's long hemlines and pale colors.

If one collection could epitomize the season—the fun, the lightness, the joie de vivre, and certain devil-may-care-attitude that comes when one is on vacation (you know exactly what we’re talking about)—it’s Bottega Veneta. The colorblocked dresses (in sheer fabrications) are precisely what you’d wear on holiday in St. Tropez—or just a weekend jaunt to Miami.

Just because it’s resort doesn’t mean you have to give up your minimal color palette. Nautical stripes are not for everyone. Calvin Klein Collection sent out a sedately hued (naturally) show of white filmy dresses, light suits, and halter necks which evoked a modern day goddess. Fancy a trip to the isles anyone?
