Shop 'til you drop ... literally. This year saw record-breaking turnout and spending.

While some Americans were basking in a tryptophan haze the day after Thanksgiving—otherwise known as Black Friday—many, many others were hitting the stores (and their credit cards).

According to the National Retail Federation, a record 226 million shoppers braved this year's Black Friday crowds (the survey included Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday), beating last year’s 212 million, Reuters reports.

Need a little perspective? The current United States population is about 311 million—which means over 70% of the population went shopping this weekend.

As for how much money was dropped? Average spending per person was up from $365.34 in 2010 to $398.62, with total spending hitting an incredible $52.4 billion.

Of course, serious shoppers aren’t finished with the post-holiday haul just yet: Today, November 28, is Cyber Monday! Check out our roundup of the best online sales.
