Madonna, Lea Michele and Evan Rachel Wood dive into one of spring's biggest trends.

A surefire way to make a splash at an A-list awards ceremony? Why a mermaid-inspired gown, of course.

Sea-worthy styles in shimmery silver and deep green washed ashore at the 2012 Golden Globes in Los Angeles.

Leading the way (and living up to her Material Girl moniker), Madonna certainly didn't scrimp on fabric with her voluminous embroidered Reem Acra gown. Winner for Best Original Song ("Masterpiece" from her movie W.E.), the performer-turned-director completed her glistening seaweed-like ball skirted creation with $2.5 million worth of Neil Lane booty, er jewelry.

Lea Michele, meanwhile, wore an ultra-revealing Marchesa number that featured a sheer illusion bodice and silver liquid sequin skirt, which fishtailed down her body into a puddle train. (Michele went with the Georgina Chapman-designed label for the People's Choice Awards on January 11 as well.)

Glee's good girl added extra shine (and a pop of color) with Lorraine Schwartz's blackened platinum and diamond earrings and a blackened platinum and 29-carat emerald ring.

Also on board with Spring 2012's under-the-sea trend was Evan Rachel Wood in a custom-designed Gucci Première plunging halter-neck gown in midnight green. Thanks to its embroidered overlapping fish scale paillettes and ostrich plumes that graduated into a full skirt of iridescent feathers, the dress read full-on mermaid.

The Mildred Pierce star finished her ocean-appropriate look with Fred Leighton jewelry.
