Knit pick: The Duchess wore a bolero over her McQueen royal wedding party dress.

Nude tights, flesh-toned pumps, and now boleros? Is there anything in our mother's closet that Catherine can't make unexpectedly cool?

After changing into a second Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen gown capped with an ivory angora bolero cardigan for her wedding reception, the newly minted Duchess of Cambridge is being credited with creating a new demand for the sweater alternative, particularly among brides, the Daily Mail reports.

British department store Debenhams has noted a consistent uptick in sales of shrugs and boleros since the April 29 Royal Wedding, up to 69 percent cumulatively compared to last year.

"Although white and ivory are proving popular in this category, our experts believe that women are buying into the shrug trend created by Catherine, but in darker colors that are easier to team with a broader range of outfits," store spokeswoman Carie Barkhuizen tells the paper.

With winter on its way, it's assumed that more brides will be reaching for the fuzzy shrugs to keep toasty. Still, the chance to mimic the Duchess may be temptation enough for some brides.

"This shrug reminds me of something Catherine Middleton wore the evening of her wedding," a shopper called Mel commented on the Web site for Monsoon, which sells an Alice Angora Shrug, described by another bride as "very Kate Middleton."

Well, you know what they say: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But if the Duchess busts out Jean Sweats, we may have to go Cromwell on her.
