The son of Jewish immigrants from Belarus, the Bronx-born designer actually had his name changed for him by brother and guardian George. Though his other brother Lenny kept the original surname, Ralph told Oprah Winfrey that he and George were teased at school for his moniker’s, ahem, unpleasant connotations to a certain four-letter word.
