A preview of the Gap Fall 2011 collection

Attention working ladies: Your weekday wardrobe is about to get ramped up a few notches.

Gap previewed its Fall 2011 collection Wednesday evening. In a word? Leather. Oh, and sexy. OK, and well-tailored separates.

Leather was indeed the big story here, with leggings and pants paired with oversize knits. Office appropriate? Depends where you work. The skin didn't stop there: A thin leather button-up blouse fell perfectly on the body. And the black leather dress walks the right line between meetings all day and dancing all night.

The season's trousers, while still maintaining the brand's fit, are slim but not skinny. Consider it a more modern look for the office. The flared pants were subtle and cropped.

Gap also showcased a heritage collection, an updated look at classic pieces. The new cargo pants have lost all the bulk and are skin tight. Patterned button-ups are slightly sheer for a more feminine appearance.

And in case you're wondering where the denim is—it's there, and plenty of it. The wide-leg trouser, which the brand débuted for Spring, is back. A denim staple for Fall—they flatter the legs and don't feature the dreaded high waist so many find impossible to wear.

The collection overall was certainly very fashion forward and trend focused, a shift Gap's been making for a while. Patrick Robinson, the global vice-president of design, has his fashion cred down with his background at quite a few major labels. And with this début, the brand officially has one foot on the runway.

Will it fly with its tried-and-true fans? That remains to be seen, but the crowd at the preview sure loved it.
