OVERALL TAKEAWAY: Another season, another Burberry Prorsum trench to lust after (how does this always happen?). For Spring 2013, chief creative officer Christopher Bailey offered a bright, poppy, and futuristic vision of 1940s glamour as seen through the lens of iconic photographer Norman Parkinson. That meant seeing the label's iconic trench in crisp metallic leather and luscious satin in a juicy array of jewel tones, plus a feathered number that caused many a jaw to drop. It was all we could do to not wrestle Cara Delevingne to the ground and make off with her clothes.
In keeping with the collection's theme, capes including cropped capelets in glossy plastic and corsets were a common theme, with the rainbow-hued trenches, dresses, tops, and even skirts adopting the nipped-in look.
Ruched one-piece swimsuits evoked the '40s, and shoulders had that slouchy yet sculptural look that was the mainstay of Old Hollywood.
It's not often that a collection can feel as forward-thinking and futuristic while still remaining charmingly retro, but Bailey nailed it. What else is new?
