OVERALL TAKEAWAY: As usual, Monique Lhuillier trotted out a lineup of red carpet-ready looks. You know what you’re going to get with the designer: very feminine evening wear. Her designs consistently top the best-dressed ballot with perfectly valid reason. The gowns are reliably snapshot-worthy with glamour in spades.

But this season, instead of frothy sheets of tulle and lace, the sheer voluminous layers we’ve come to expect, Lhuillier charted a different lineup. Both day and night looks were influenced by the sea, the models with freshly swum-in hair in a variety of prints—crane, fish, koi, according to her liner notes—and shiny, oh were they shiny, numbers.

Vibrant aquas and blues, often tinged with metallic detail, were plentiful, as were cinched-in peplums and more spacious coats. Our particular favorite? The last look of the evening: a head-to-toe gold gold. Not for the faint of heart. It was stunning.

This would be why Ariel wanted to take her sea legs for a spin. Can’t say that we blame her.
