We owe a lot to Jacqueline Susann.
Without the writer's salacious novel, Valley of the Dolls, and its big-screen adaptation, Lana Del Rey would be just another flat-haired singer, and jazz-handing to "sparkle, Neely, sparkle!" would elicit stares of confusion instead of a nodded understanding of Patty Duke's histrionics.
