9 Things You Didn’t Know About Nike Air Force 1

The original Nike Air Force 1 was released in 1982 but in high-top form and has become one of the
most popular shoes of all time. The Nike Air Force 1 has become a symbol of music, culture, and style which has made it much more than simply a sneaker. The Air Force 1 was a ground-breaking design when it was created by designer Bruce Kilgore, but even today it is still breaking new ground with the development of the Air Force 1 Black and Air Force 1 White.

There have been multiple trainer releases of the Air Force 1 which has made it a shoe that most people have owned or known of at some point in their life. The shoe has come a long way from its initial basketball-based creation and now comes in five different styles and variations. However, while you
are likely to recognize the Nike Air Force 1 in one of its trainer releases, there are many things that you may not know about it. Here are nine things that you probably don’t know about the timeless classic,
the Nike Air Force 1.

Nike Sells More Than 10 Million Pairs Every Year

While Nike doesn’t like to release its final sales figures, it is estimated that around 10 million pairs are sold every year worldwide, which makes it one of Nike’s best-selling shoes of all time. However, we do know that back in 2005, when the shoe was at its peak in popularity and demand, it sold around 12 million pairs in that year alone. This is an indicator of how popular the shoe has been and still is. Even from what we know about the success of the latest Nike Air Force 1 releases show that the next drops
are just as popular as previous ones.

They’re Named After the President’s Plane

Due to the several different variations and types of the shoe that Nike has released, it could be assumed that the Air Force 1 was just a retroactive name of the very first edition of the sneaker. However, this is not the case. In fact, the initial release in 1982 was labelled ‘AIR FORCE I’, with lettering on the tongue of the shoe, in honour of the President’s very own private plane. There have been rumours that Nike
has sent a few pairs of their popular shoe to the White House, but this has never been officially confirmed!

It Was Once Discontinued!

Even though we now know how popular the Air Force 1 has become, this wasn’t always the case. After
it was created and released back in 1982, it was then discontinued two years later in 1984. This was because at first it was just regarded as another Nike basketball shoe that would be popular for a year or two before it was pushed aside for a better and more popular release. Even the designers expected this
to be the case as Kilgore himself was already working on designs for the seasons to come when the Air Force 1 was released. I guess it is true what they say: legends are born and not made straight away!

It Was the First Retro Sneaker

After the original Air Force 1 was discontinued in 1986, people were surprised that it was being brought back. At the time, sneakers such as the Air Force 1 would come and go with a better edition coming out the following season. While the All-Star Converse was still around and stronger than ever,
no other shoe manufacturer had brought a shoe back into production. So, to the public, this made no sense. Why would they spend money on a shoe that had been released, but then made obsolete by new releases? However, as the shoe was developed and drew the attention of the Hip-Hop industry, the
shoe rocketed in popularity, and that, as they say, was history.

The Design Was Hiking Inspired?

Before the creation of the legend that would one day be the Air Force 1, basketball shoes were all high-tops that featured a straight cut across the top of the shoes. A high-top shoe had a high top, and everyone knew where they stood, and then along came the Air Force 1 with its hiker inspired slanted
cut that angled lowered. This meant that this new creation provided just as much support to the wearer, but made it much more flexible. All praise Nike!

It Has Strong Ties with Hip Hop

One of the biggest influences on the shoe is its connections with the hip hop industry. It is undoubtedly true that the hip-hop culture massively contributed to the shoe’s popularity when stars such as Jay Z
and Nelly made it the shoe that everyone wanted. It was so popular, in fact, that leading rivals, such as Reebok, released the Reebok Air Pressure to try and keep up and get a slice of the Air Force 1’s popularity. This just shows how popular and influential the sneaker was and still is.

It Has Undergone Many Transformations

There are so many different types and variations of the Air Force 1, from the double white edition that was released in the last 1990s, for the black and orange edition. Jay Z also added his own creation when he released his black album that had its own signature Air Force 1 to match. This sneaker was all black with white edges, which was a whole new look for the shoe.

The NYC shoe has also been created, which is one of the most popular shoes of all time. Fans of the Air Force 1 will argue that NYC has made the shoe what it is as even as far back as it being discontinued in 1986, it was the shops in Baltimore that helped to bring it back.

It Hasn’t Always Been Marketed

However, it hasn’t always been as publicly marketed and promoted as it is today. When it was first released it wasn’t given a very big marketing campaign, which meant you had to know where to get it from in order to get yourself a pair. Now, you can find an entire collection of Air Force 1 releases within
a matter of seconds through a simple Google search. For instance, if you take a look at The Sole Supplier you can find all the different variations of the sneaker, from high-tops to the Earth Day edition. They’ll be able to give you all the information you need about each release and point you in the direction of where to buy them.

NBA Players Couldn’t Destroy Them

It was well-known that in the time that the original Air Force 1 was released, NBA players would
destroy and ruin their shoes on a regular basis. If you think about some of the older players such as Charles Barkley running around the court, then you won’t be surprised that not many shoes lived to
tell the tail! But as the Air Force 1 was more flexible as its cupsole was more constructed, NBA players could work their magic without worrying about destroying their shoes!

The Air Force 1 white is one of the most popular shoes of all time and has made Nike billions of pounds since its creation back in 1982. However, even the latest Nike Air Force 1 is popular amongst diehard fans and designers are also offering something new to the classic shoe.
